USS Enterprise Crosses Hampton Roads for Final Voyage
Back in the day, which was a Wednesday, I helped refit the Enterprise at the Newport News Shipyard. One of the worst of these jobs was crawling through the catapults dragging a welding machine, exhaust tube and a toolbag. Now the BigE is crossing the harbor from Norfolk to Newport News to have its nuclear engines removed (it will still have diesel) and be formally decommissioned. I suspect after most of the usable equipment is removed, it may be towed up the James to join the mothball fleet or towed to someplace to serve as a floating museum.
Another little know fact about my time on the Enterprise- I was asked by a lesbian coworker of mine to be her best man at a lesbian wedding. It was a beautiful ceremony.
