Fake Rocks Are Still Being Used as Spy Devices
Back in 2006, I wrote about a fake rock that was used to transmit and receive data from Russian Spies in Moscow. Now it seems that the technology has evolved quite a bit and devices hidden inside fake rocks are hacking into the Iranian uranium enrichment facility.
From Alarabiya here:
A spy device camouflaged as a rock exploded when it came into contact with Iranian troops near an underground nuclear enrichment plant.
Last month, Revolutionary Guards at the Fordo nuclear facility, near the northern city of Qom, came across the rock and attempted to move it.
The guards, who had been on patrol to check terminals connecting data and telephone links to the site, reportedly witnessed the disguised spy device exploding when they came into contact with it.
Experts who surveyed the scene of the explosion, analyzed remnants of the device and found it had been able to intercept data from computers at the nuclear plant, where uranium is enriched.
The finding has sparked speculation over whether the spy device could have been a significant source of intelligence for Western countries, which has now been lost.
If it was a receiving device, it means that there is still some type of node on the internal network as well that is still transmitting unless that has been located as well. The technology has advanced for the components, but the methodology is still the same used back in 2006.
