TouchDown Jesus Replaced by Fish This Big Jesus

After Touchdown Jesus was zapped and destroyed by lightning, an artist got to work to replace it with FishThisBig Jesus.

The replacement for “Touchdown Jesus” won’t look so … football-like.

Next spring, a new design by local artist Tom Tsuchiya will replace the iconic Jesus statue at Solid Rock Church along Interstate 75 in Monroe.

That statue, with arms raised high and sculpted from the waist up, was destroyed in a spectacular fire caused by a lightning strike last June. It had been erected in 2004 at a cost of $250,000.

A more traditional representation of Christ will replace it, but will still dominate the landscape, rising to the original statue’s height of 62 feet when it is completed next spring.
