I Remember 9-11

I was working in the Security Operations Center at Riptech on September 11, 2001. I was running late to work and listening to the many false reports over the local radio about how missiles were being fired from Rosslyn Virginia and that the White House was being evacuated. As I drove around the bottom of the beltway past the “mixing bowl” I looked to my left toward DC and saw the horrifying cloud of black smoke coming from the hole in the side of the Pentagon. A part of that building I had worked in just a few years earlier.

I got into work and took my seat in my Analysis pod, having pushed through the masses of people who crowded the SOC floor to watch in horror on our big screens as the towers fell. Some of them had family members and friends in those towers. I remember taking calls from our customers wondering if we were detecting coordinated cyber attack activity too in conjunction with this physical attack. I told them no- nothing unusual was taking place. A week later, some whackjob was sending anthrax to Congress and the news outlets and someone unleashed the Nimda worm after that.
