Haitian Hilarity: Can’t Rebuild Homes Unless They are “Green”
Haitians are getting swamped because they are still outdoors as the rebuilding efforts after the earthquake have slowed. Its the rainy season and some of the refugee camps have become muddy pits of despair. But instead of rebuilding the destroyed homes and buildings, Haitians are forced to use “sustainable” materials and build “Green.”

Before the earthquake struck Haiti in January, leaving millions of people homeless and without access to food or water, UN officials were already helping the country prepare for the worst. But the disasters they were anticipating were hurricanes and flooding from denuded hillsides, not collapsed buildings. Officials are now putting some programs on a temporary hold as they focus on a new priority: green building. The new structures, if taken from a page out of Chilean design, could help prevent earthquake damage in the future.
To avoid future tragedies in Haiti, the U.S. Green Building Council pledged that it will help the country recover and rebuild. Rick Fedrizzi, the CEO of USGBC, visited Haiti last spring with former U.S. President Bill Clinton, the UN Special Envoy to Haiti, and a small UN working group. They have begun developing plans, according to the USGBC, that will jumpstart rebuilding.
Another effort that began before the earthquake, and could help alleviate the need for so much foreign aid, is a push for more vegetable gardens. Using relief money, organizations could help Haitians replant their plots.
Chileans didn’t use “green technology” to build strong buildings. They just didn’t rely on International handouts and they have a nice capitalist society. If there is any proof that liberalism and socialism dooms a country look at how bad the Haitians are now. They can’t even rebuild their homes unless they use the proper “green materials” and must grown their own food on tiny garden plots under UN direct supervision.
I think it’s wrong to force a decision down anyone’s throat and say “you must build in this way”, although I definitely see many benefits to responsible rebuilding (http://apeaceofconflict.com/2010/03/10/responsible-re-building-in-disaster-zones/). For the most part, it is not the earthquake that kills, but rather poor construction that falls on top of people. Responsible rebuilding can help prevent history from repeating itself and building gardens can help the people feed themselves.
Food and shelter are an immediate priority. Relief in the form of goods, services and sturdy temporary shelter should be first, not green construction. And gardening solves nothing either. You can’t grow enough food in a garden to feed these people NOW, and even when its harvested it won’t provide by a tiny amount of nutrition.
I think its just another way for liberals in charge to feel good about themselves while black people slowly die on the sidelines.
