Oracle Buys Sun for 7.4 Billion
Some bloggers are wondering if the buyout of Sun will spell the end of the opensource MySQL. I don’t think it will. What I fear is that Java code will be patched as infrequently as Oracle, which currently offers patches on a quarterly basis.
From CNN here:
Software giant Oracle’s $7.4 billion deal for Sun (JAVA, Fortune 500) trumped IBM’s reported $7 billion offer, which was first reported in March. Negotiations between Sun and IBM fell through two weeks ago after IBM reduced its offer by about $1 per share and Sun expressed concerns that its potential acquirer had too much freedom to pull out of the deal.
Sun used to be the giant of the tech industry. It is a monumental occasion when a company that was a foundation of the tech revolution gets acquired in a buyout.
