Rodney King Gets New House

I caught Sober House last night on VH-1. Dr. Drew is a little bit of a hero of mine because of the way he has a no excuses approach to dealing with behavior and addiction. But his drawback is that he is doing his practice on television, where it can do both some real good and some real bad. Case in point: He gave Rodney King a new house. Yes, that Rodney King. Rodney King’s behavior directly contributed to the deaths of 53 people in the 1992 Los Angeles riots. The 4 Million dollars cash reward for his bad behavior was wasted on a stupid Hip Hop recording studio and a grocery-cart full of crack and malt liquor.

I would never begrudge an addict an opportunity to get himself clean and sober. But to give this reprehensible dirtbag a free house is irresponsible and will not help Rodney kick his addiction. In fact, during one of the moments on the show last night where they use hopeful yet sad music as a soundtrack to this idiot’s tearful missives, he claimed that he had trouble forgiving the police that beat him. So after all these years, Rodney King still has never admitted his fault for the predicament he put himself in and for the terrible consequences of the subsequent riots.

Maybe Rodney King will really straighten his life out now. But I don’t for a second believe he will. He stands a better chance of burning down his new house when his new Meth lab explodes.
