Spirit of Nantucket Struck Underwater Debris
Just as I had predicted. I thought it may have been a log, but it was much bigger. What sounds to me as a huge bundle of railroad ties or possibly keel blocks from a nearby shipyard was floating beneath the surface of the water when it was struck by the small cruise liner.
From the Daily Press here:
A hunk of wood and steel. Seven feet tall, 13 feet wide, 40 feet long. Weighs 30, maybe 40 tons.
That’s what caused the hole in a cruise ship that was intentionally run aground in Virginia Beach Friday while passing through the Intracoastal Waterway.
It is “a bunch of 12x12s pinned together,” but no one has figured out yet how old it is or what it was originally used for.
