I Thought MIT Students Were Smart?
If geekiness were a religion, MIT would be its Mecca. Usually MIT students are some of the brightest this country has to offer. But I guess common sense took a vacation when it comes to Star Simpson, a 19 year old dimwit who strapped a circuit board, wires and play-doh to her chest to go run around Logan Airport in Boston.
Stupidity sometimes affects MIT
From WBZTV here:
An MIT student with a fake bomb strapped to her chest was arrested at gunpoint Friday at Logan International Airport and later claimed it was artwork, officials said.
Star Simpson, 19, had a computer circuit board and wiring in plain view over a black hooded sweat shirt she was wearing, said State Police Maj. Scott Pare, the commanding officer at the airport.
“She said that it was a piece of art and she wanted to stand out on career day,” Pare said at a news conference. “She claims that it was just art, and that she was proud of the art and she wanted to display it.”
The battery-powered rectangular device had nine flashing lights, he said. Simpson also had Play-Doh in her hands, he said.
Simpson pleaded not guilty to a charge of possessing a hoax device at her arraignment in East Boston District Court Friday afternoon. She was released on $750 bail and ordered to stay away from Logan Airport.
Simpson could face up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
“I’m shocked and appalled that somebody would wear this type of device to an airport,” Pare said. Simpson was “extremely lucky she followed the instructions or deadly force would have been used. She’s lucky to be in a cell as opposed to the morgue.”
Propellor-beanie wearing idiots who scoff at national security are going to wind up getting themselves or someone else killed.
What an idiot. She’s lucky she didn’t get a few rounds pumped into her.
Jewells,
Welcome to the blog. The ironic part is that Ms. Simpson seems to be very proud of her intelligence and the fact that she got into MIT, and hell, I would be too. So what was her thought process when she made the decision to pull a ridiculous stunt like this? I half-expect to see a YouTube video of the stunt or she will certainly claim that this was a freedom of speech political stunt. Neither of those excuse her actions.
How could she plead not guilty to possessing a hoax device? Even if she calls it “art,” it’s a hoax device.
