Oscar the “Soul Reaver” Nursing Home Cat

A doctor at a nursing home had an article published in the New England Journal of Medicine documenting a phenomena whereby Oscar the Cat sucks the souls out of his patients.

Sensing weakness, the furry feline pounces and then feasts upon the soul of the sick elderly, like the dementors in the Harry Potter films.  And then it simply walks away to hack up a furball or lick its butt.

From the AP here:

Oscar the cat seems to have an uncanny knack for predicting when nursing home patients are going to die, by curling up next to them during their final hours. His accuracy, observed in 25 cases, has led the staff to call family members once he has chosen someone. It usually means they have less than four hours to live.

The 2-year-old feline was adopted as a kitten and grew up in a third-floor dementia unit at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

After about six months, the staff noticed Oscar would make his own rounds, just like the doctors and nurses. He’d sniff and observe patients, then sit beside people who would wind up dying in a few hours.

Oscar seems to take his work seriously and is generally aloof.  Oscar recently received a wall plaque publicly commending his “compassionate hospice care.”

Seriously, why anyone would want a four-footed grim reaper is beyond me.  I say put this animal down before it kills again!

  • wasn’t there a Steven King story about cats that suck the souls (or life force) out of people ?

  • Yes, there was! The movie is “Cat’s Eye” That cat’s name was General, and he was owned by a very young Drew Barrymore. General was drawn to Barrymore’s character because he knew that a tiny troll was living under her bed and the cat was there to vanquish the little villain.

Awesome movie- I have it on DVD!

  • wow, I forgot about that one. I was thinking about a short story in which an old man wanted his cat killed and hired some guy to do so. The cat wound up winning in the end… but now that I think about it, I may be mixing up the plots of both movies.

  • kanga

for the record, not long after Oscar the cat’s story was told on CNN, a follow up story (also on CNN) reported that he had been killed. It was mentioned (and rumored) that a dented bedpan was near his body.

apparently there was a lot of animosity towards the cat from the residents. As fascinating as his story is, I can’t say I blame the residents for hating him.

  • Kanga, if that’s true, its funny as hell.
