Reason 398 to Homeschool
When your state board of education tries to be nice to Hispanics by rehiring a convicted cocaine dealer as a math teacher, you can just say NO.
Connecticut must be so down to the felt as far as teachers go that they just had to hire back that one crappy math teacher that was dealing cocaine, because “everyone deserves a second chance.” But I thought schools had a zero tolerance policy for drugs? If this guy was selling firearms, would the idiotic board of education hire him back? Probably not.
From WCBSTV here:
The state Board of Education has restored the teaching license of a man who was convicted of selling drugs while he was a math teacher at a New Haven school.
“I believe in redemption and second chances,” Patricia Luke, vice chairwoman of the state board said Thursday. “Without second chances in this world, we would lose much talent and so many gifts.”
Orlando Hernandez, 37, will be allowed to return to the classroom, but under some very strict conditions. He will be subject to random drug testing and the decision limits him to teaching at The Bridge Academy in Bridgeport until 2010.
Hernandez was a math teacher at Fair Haven Middle School when he was arrested for selling cocaine to an undercover police officer in 2003. Hernandez’s teaching certificate was automatically revoked when he was convicted Feb. 11, 2004. He was given a conditional discharge and a suspended sentence of three years in prison.
It seems Hernandez had a really sad tale of woe to pitch to the Board of Education, and old crone Patricia Luke fell for it because his story was so sad and she is a diehard liberal educator at heart. The question is now, will she ignore all drug convictions when doing background checks for teachers based on giving second chances?
