Spam at the Speed of Light
Verizon is installing a new fiber optic cable to link the US directly to China. The current bandwidth is already choked with viruses, malware, botnet traffic and spam. But now we will get more!
From the AFP here:
BEIJING (AFP) – A new 500-million-dollar fiber optic cable between China and the United States will be vital in helping to meet booming Internet traffic between the two nations, state press has reported.
US telecom giant Verizon Communications announced Monday it would build the cable in a joint project with firms from China, South Korea and Taiwan.
Construction of the new cable system, which will extend more than 18,000 kilometers (11,160 miles), will begin in the first quarter of 2007, Verizon said. Completion is scheduled in the third quarter of 2008.
I have been telling clients for years that one easy way to reduce threats to their networks is to block all internet traffic to or from China. That recommendation will not change. But now with the increased bandwidth, China will be able to launch effective DDoSes much more easily.
