CheckPoint Buys NFR

Checkpoint was going down a list looking for an Intrusion Detection System that it could bundle with its firewall. The deal with SourceFire was nixed by the Feds. Other better IDS products, like ISS, were snatched up by competitors. So what was left? Little ol’ Network Flight Recorder, or NFR.

From CNET here:

Check Point to tack on NFR Security
In a deal valued at $20 million, Check Point Software Technologies gels a new growth strategy: buy others.

Under the deal, which is expected to close this month, Check Point plans to integrate NFR’s intrusion detection and prevention technologies across its product lines, which include firewall, virtual private network and security management software.

In the fall of last year, Check Point announced plans to acquire Sourcefire in a $225 million deal.

Ick. NFR used to be a horrible tool to use to analyze network anomalies and intrusions. I havent used it in many years, and Im sure it improved. But compared to the power of Snort, NFR doesnt hold a candle. And the price tag of the company reflects that.
