Dutch Bans the Burka
It sounds to me like the patience of the Dutch with its militant and non-conforming Islamic immigrant population has run out. For security reasons, they are banning the headscarves and veils. I think it is an excellent idea, and I applaud the Dutch for sticking together for their own self-preservation of their culture and public safety.
The Dutch are incredibly tolerant and liberal. You can smoke dope, engage in prostitution and have gay marriage. But when it comes to yelling “Allah Akbar” and stabbing citizens in the streets, the Dutch ‘just say no.’

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – The Dutch government agreed on Friday a total ban on the wearing of burqas and other Muslim face veils in public, justifying the move on security grounds.
“The cabinet finds it undesirable that garments covering the face — including the burqa — should be worn in public in view of public order, (and) the security and protection of fellow citizens,” the Dutch Justice Ministry said in a statement.
Italy has a decades-old law against covering the face in public as an anti-terrorism measure. Some politicians have called for this rule to be enforced against veiled Muslim women.
In recent years the Dutch have lost their reputation for tolerance and pushed through some of Europe’s toughest entry and integration laws.
Social and religious tensions have escalated in the last few years, exacerbated by the murder of film director Theo van Gogh by a (muslim) Dutch-Moroccan militant in 2004.
I think Reuters has a lot of nerve to say that the Dutch have “lost their reputation for tolerance.” If wanting to live in a society where people won’t try to kill you for criticizing Islam is “intolerant” then I guess the Dutch are all bigots.
And maybe now Muslim women can eat spaghetti in public without looking stupid.
Nice to hear about something liberal that doesn’t kowtow to the absurd pressures of political correctness but instead uses logic. Proof that you can be tolerant, liberal and still not be a mealy wimp.
I vacationed in St. Martin once and stayed on the French side. My friend and I were mugged at machete point one day and had our rental car stolen a couple days later. Turns out we should have been staying on the Dutch side, (evidently where people with brains stay). From what we were told, they have their half of the island running like clockwork and the crime is nothing compared to the French side.
Two thumbs up for the Dutch.
