Blog Spam From Karin

I don’t often write about blogging issues. But since this is a cyber trend, I thought I would briefly mention a new spate of blog spam from several .info websites.

“Blog Spam” is fake comments or trackbacks that usually have hyperlinks back to a site with Google Adwords or some other type of commerce site. Some Blog Spam will actually link to a malicious site that will automatically install spyware of trojan horses via a weakness in a web browser or making calls to weak plugins or even an outdated version of java.
The spam is in the form of comments from someone named “Karin” thanking bloggers for information she was searching for on Google. The text of the spam is:

I am Karin, very interesting article that contained the information I was searching for in Google, thanks.

WordPress, which powers this blog, has some excellent built-in anti spam tools. It features a banned IP list along with a keyword ban that you can use to filter out spam comments.

So if you are running WordPress or even TypeAd, update your ban list to reflect the word “Karin.” It is always fortunate when stupid spammers make security jobs easier with poor spelling.
