Herndon Voters Decide on Illegal Alien Issues
I live on the outskirts of Herndon, and spend my money in Herndon, and enjoy the nightlife in Herndon. Last Year, when Herndon became embroiled in the national debate on illegal aliens and day laborers by voting to use tax payer money to build a stupid day laborer site so people can give these criminals jobs, I was upset.
Evidently, the majority of Herndon residents were upset too. And they threw the bums that voted for this stupid idea OUT. I only hope they have the guts to begin to round up the illegals too.
Congrats to newly elected Herndon Mayor Steve Benedittis!
From the WaPo here:
Herndon voters yesterday unseated the mayor and two Town Council members who supported a bitterly debated day-labor center for immigrant workers in a contest that emerged as a mini-referendum on the turbulent national issue of illegal immigration.
Residents replaced the incumbents with challengers who immediately called for significant changes at the center.
Steve J. DeBenedittis greets voters. DeBenedittis, 38, a health club operator and political newcomer, defeated Mayor Michael L. O’Reilly with 52 percent of the vote.
The labor center forced the western Fairfax County town into the national spotlight last summer as the immigration debate grew deeply contentious. Even though fewer than 3,000 people voted yesterday, advocates on both sides of the issue looked at the Herndon election as a test of public sentiment.
The council voted 5 to 2 last August to establish the center, but yesterday’s vote created an apparent 6 to 1 majority in opposition. Steve J. DeBenedittis, 38, a health club operator and political newcomer, defeated Mayor Michael L. O’Reilly with 52 percent of the vote. Council members Carol A. Bruce and Steven D. Mitchell, who voted for the center, also were turned out of office. Jorge Rochac, a Salvadoran businessman who supported the center and was seeking to become the town’s first Hispanic council member, also was defeated.
Mayor Steve has a great vision for his community. From his election site:
Picture a town with a wealth of diverse and involved citizens, nurturing and preserving its historical heritage and the American dream, where town government leaders exist to support the needs and desires of tax-paying residents, where the town s diversity doesn t have to exist at the expense of legality, where Federal and State laws are enforced…
Thanks to Michelle pointing to the WaPo story. The illegal alien issue is a huge problem in Herndon. It is even attracting the MS13 gang, which have been involved in robberies and even a Machete attack on a teenager. I hope Mayor Steve cleans up this town.
